In the digital creative space, Photoshop’s * generative AI is not only a powerful tool for creating new images but also a transformative filter that can change existing images into various art styles. Unlike other tools and even the filters within Photoshop, using generative fill to turn images into art opens up limitless possibilities. The outcome depends mostly on the description you give it as a prompt, and therefore, the options are endless.
The process of changing the style of an existing image involves a series of steps. First, the image layer is selected, and we enter a quick mask. Within this mask, we fill the layer with black color. Then, after exiting the quick mask, we will run the AI generative fill.
The Process In Steps:
- 1. Make a selection over the entire base image layer
- 2. Enter "Qucik Mask" [Q]
- 3. Fill everything with black [Shift + F5] - Enter in fill %
- 4. Exit Quick Mask [Q]
- 5. Generate using a prompt describing the desired art style
The percentage we used to fill the layer in the quick mask affects how strongly the AI will change the original image. A higher fill value implies less influence from the AI, resulting in an output closer to the original image. On the flip side, using a lower fill percentage gives more weight to the entered prompt, but the result may look less like the original image.
Examples:
Here are the images that we will use as the starting point for the generation examples we’ll be exploring. The images selected for the demonstration represent different types. Each illustrates how different filter prompts work on specific image categories.
Landscape generated with Photoshop AI
Among the images, we have an AI generated landscape, a female portrait, an image of a bird, a close-up of an eagle, and a fruit composition on a black background. Collectively, these images help show how different AI prompts transform different pictures.Â
Art Styles:
The art style we will try to generate in the examples are:
- Cartoon
- Watercolor Painitng
- Oil Painitng
- Acrylic Painitng
- Clay
- Ink Painitng
- Yarn Art
- Origami Paper
- Stained Glass
- Graffiti
- Sticker and Splash
- Woodcut Illustration

Photoshop actions for quickly generating each of the above art styles and more can be downloaded from the download section of this post.

How to work with downloaded Actions?
The Download includes 5 actions folders
Two of the folders in the download are the base folders that include the steps described at the beginning of the post. These two action folders need to be loaded into Photoshop actions to run actions from the other 3 folders. (You do not need to run the actions in those folders manually, they will be activated automatically when you run one action from the full AI filter set.
