AI Mastery: Transform Any Image into Multiple Styles with Photoshop AI [No Plugins]
Using generative fill to turn images into various art styles opens up limitless possibilities. Turn a photo into cartoon character, origami creation and more.
In the digital creative space, Photoshop’s * generative AI is not only a powerful tool for creating new images but also a transformative filter that can change existing images into various art styles. Unlike other tools and even the filters within Photoshop, using generative fill to turn images into art opens up limitless possibilities. The outcome depends mostly on the description you give it as a prompt, and therefore, the options are endless.
The process of changing the style of an existing image involves a series of steps. First, the image layer is selected, and we enter a quick mask. Within this mask, we fill the layer with black color. Then, after exiting the quick mask, we will run the AI generative fill.
The Process In Steps:
1. Make a selection over the entire base image layer
2. Enter "Qucik Mask" [Q]
3. Fill everything with black [Shift + F5] - Enter in fill %
4. Exit Quick Mask [Q]
5. Generate using a prompt describing the desired art style
The percentage we used to fill the layer in the quick mask affects how strongly the AI will change the original image. A higher fill value implies less influence from the AI, resulting in an output closer to the original image. On the flip side, using a lower fill percentage gives more weight to the entered prompt, but the result may look less like the original image.
Examples:
In this post, we’ll explore various design styles and prompts that can be used to generate artistic transformations over existing images. Running the generation process over different images with different settings can lead to highly diverse outputs.
Here are the images that we will use as the starting point for the generation examples we’ll be exploring. The images selected for the demonstration represent different types. Each illustrates how different filter prompts work on specific image categories.
Among the images, we have an AI generated landscape, a female portrait, an image of a bird, a close-up of an eagle, and a fruit composition on a black background. Collectively, these images help show how different AI prompts transform different pictures.Â
Art Styles:
The art style we will try to generate in the examples are:

Analyzing Results
Looking at the examples, it’s clear that Photoshop AI can turn a basic picture into a real masterpiece. The outcomes, however, vary, ranging from remarkable to less impressive.Â
Factors that may affect the results:
1. Image resolution
2. Image type and quality
3. The selected area size for the transformation
4. The accuracy of the prompt given to the AI
5. Fill percentage used in the quick mask mode
Running the transformation process in smaller areas of an image has the potential to enhance the generated results. This involves dividing the image into several parts and individually selecting each segment. On each selected part, the quick mask action is applied, followed by the layer filled with black color, exiting the quick mask, and then the AI generation. By repeating this series of steps for each segment of the image, we may achieve a more accurate result.
Download Actions
You can download the following actions set to make the process faster and easier.Â
Two of the folders in the download are the base folders that include the steps described at the beginning of the post. These two action folders need to be loaded into Photoshop actions to run actions from the other 3 folders. (You do not need to run the actions in those folders manually, they will be activated automatically when you run one action from the full AI filter set.
The masks for AI .atn are the first base actions folder. Each of the actions in it includes the following step.Â
1. Make a selection over the entire base image layer
2. Enter "Qucik Mask" [Q]
3. Fill everything with black [Shift + F5] - Enter in fill %
4. Exit Quick Mask [Q]
The layer fill percentage in the quick mask mode is different in each action in this folder.
The AI gen prompts .atn is the second base actions folder. Each of the actions includes running a generative fill with a prompt matching the art style of the filter.
Full AI filter set 50% fill .atn (and the one with .40% fill or 60% fill) is a folder of actions that you can run over your image selection in Photoshop and those will act as AI filters that can be generated in one click. Running an action from one of the full AI filter set folders will perform all the actions required to generate the AI art style transformation. Â
When running actions with 50% and 60% fill folders, you will get a warning about not visible selection. Click “OK” and the process will continue.
Conclusion
The examples presented in this post are just a glimpse of the boundless artistic transformations you can achieve with the AI-generated filters in Adobe Photoshop *. What makes this process truly remarkable is that there is no fixed set of filters. The results can be anything you imagine and anything you didn’t imagine yet. The more you play around with different prompts and images, the more the endless possibilities will amaze you.
